In the silence of the heart God speaks. If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you. Then you will know that you are nothing. It is only when you realize your nothingness, your emptiness, that God can fill you with Himself. Souls of prayer are souls of great silence. — Mother Teresa
This simple but powerful concept of prayer that Mother Teresa writes of may seem impossible. In a single day, we have jobs to do, people to see, families who need us, and ministries to pour into. The practice of taking a moment in the midst of our hectic lives to be still before the Lord can seem counterproductive in a world that is constantly moving. The act of letting go of our accomplishments to become nothing is uncomfortable in a culture consumed with being the best. However, to let God speak and allow His spirit to move in our lives, we must be willing to set aside our to-do lists, worries, and pride.
Our hearts and minds must be able to make space for God’s voice in our hearts as we rest in His presence. As we recognize the National Day of Prayer, let’s take a moment to become still before the Lord and allow the love and grace of Christ to move in our hearts and overflow into songs of praise and thanksgiving.
United’s new song “Touch The Sky” captures this idea of laying our lives down before the Lord and allowing Him to work within us.
